New release Tuesday (3/20/07) + other stuff!

Phew. We have a ton to tell you, so let's get started, shall we? As you can see above, our listening stations are fully stocked and ready for, well, listening. With 16 CDs per station and three stations total, you can do the math and realize there is a ton of stuff for your ears to feast on. Two of the stations carry a mix of new and upcoming stuff that we like, and the third station is dedicated solely to local artists. All of it's great, though, so come in soon when you have some time on your hands. This has been a long-overdue project for the store, and we're very excited to have it up and running now.

We've also got some dandy giveaways to tell you about. Check 'em out, asterisk style:

* Sign up to win an autographed copy of Lucinda Williams' latest, West. We have the sign-up box right near the cash register.

* Want to see Snow Patrol at the Gwinett Arena on Wednesday? Well, hurry up if so, as we've got four tickets to give to whomever wants them. This goes to the first person who calls or shows up and asks. Good luck.

* Uncle Earl and Crooked Still are playing at Eddie's Attic on Thursday, and we've got half price ($5) tickets for sale. Stop by to get yours.

* Lately, we've been playing the heck out of Neil Young's latest live offering (that's the incredible-sounding one from Massey Hall for those of you keeping score at home), and now we have some lithographs to give to anyone who buys a copy.

Incidentally, tomorrow is also an awfully strong release day. Check out just a few of the great artists releasing new albums on Tuesday:

Andrew Bird
Dierks Bentley (DVD)
Cibo Matto (best)
Daath
The Decemberists (DVD)

We've got several of the above-mentioned albums on the new listening stations, and even more that we're happy to hand to you to listen to the old-fashioned way on our three CD players. Hope to see you soon!

See you next week!

Above: The crew hard at work.

More accurately, we hope to see you tomorrow. And the next day and the day after that, actually. But our blogmaster general will be taking leave of the state for a few days as he goes to some silly thing called SXSW. Chickens don't understand acronyms, so I can't explain what that means exactly. Regardless, enjoy these photos taken around the store.

Above: Eliot gets sad when he thinks about how much he misses Akron/Family.

Above: Kerry gets happy when she thinks about Cheetah Girls.

Belated Blog Birthday

You probably didn't notice since we didn't either, but our blog had a birthday recently. Since we missed it, today's post marks the one year and one week anniversary of our online ramblings. If you see the Decatur CD blog out walking around on the street, do us a favor and pinch its cute little cheek. We remember our first post like it was yesterday, and we've come a long way since then, but our goal as of today is to post more often. Look forward to that. Leave a comment below if you have any suggestions as to what sort of stuff you'd like to read here. Otherwise, we're just going to keep posting nonsense on a regular basis. Thanks, everyone!

Tommy Womack in-store photos!

Another in-store performance, another set of photos. These come from one of our favorite Decatur CD events in recent memory, Tommy Womack playing the store this past Saturday. Not only did he perform several selections from his latest and greatest, There, I Said It!, but he even closed things out with a cover of Cheap Trick's "Surrender" that practically tore his vocal chords asunder. All this while wearing a bathrobe. Said Tommy's tour manager, "Yeah, it was weird... He just woke up and stumbled out into the van. He's been wearing that thing all day." We wouldn't have had it any other way. Thanks to all of you that came out!

Blake Guthrie in-store photos!

Although it feels like it was ages ago, last Thursday, Blake Guthrie braved the hurricane-esque weather conditions in downtown Decatur to impress us with his songwriting ability. Luckily, we had some delicious beer from Twain's to make us feel better about the rain. He played a rootsy version of The Velvet Underground's "Femme Fatale" as well, which sure didn't hurt anything. Enjoy the photos...

New release Tuesday! (3/6/07)

Much like someone who always shows up on time, you can depend on tomorrow as a release date. That's because it's delivering a bunch of albums from great musical folks, including the much written-about Arcade Fire, a band that got big ups recently from both Pitchfork and the New York Times Magazine. Yes, the hype train is a-rollin', but in this case, we feel like it's deserved. But even if that particular Canadian indie rock collective isn't your thang, there are quite a few other shiny, plastic goodies landing on our shelves tomorrow. Here's a handy dandy list for your discerning perusal:

!!!
Air
Antibalas
Apostle of Hustle
Arcade Fire
Big Business
Bright Eyes (EP)
Mary Carpenter
Johnny Cash (best of)
Ry Cooder
Joey DeFrancesco (live)
Duke Ellinton (box set)
Finger Eleven
Flogging Molly
Gov't Mule (live)
The Greencards
Jonny Greenwood (compilation)
Albert Hammond Jr.
Seu Jorge (live)
Vusi Mahlasela
Wynton Marsalis
Brad Mehldau
Moaners
My Brightest Diamond (remixes)
Anita O'Day (live)
Okkervil River (reissue)
Zeena Parkins
Perpetual Groove
Gruff Rhys
RJD2
Sevendust
Son Volt
The Stooges
Maria Taylor
Kenny Werner
White Flight
Wolf and Cub

Phew. After typing that out, we realized that tomorrow is probably the biggest release day of the year so far. Hazzah! You have a little time to get last minute pre-orders in, so hurry up with the phone calls, blog comments, emails, MySpace messages, etc. We appreciate them, as always. See you soon, folks!

Tommy Womack in-store performance TOMORROW

We had such a great time last night when Blake Guthrie played here (photos coming, by the way) that we're going to have another in-store tomorrow. At 2pm on Saturday, Tommy Womack will be here, and we're quite excited. Tommy just put out a new album, There, I Said It!, and we've been playing it a lot here in the store because it's filled with the passionate, sometimes-hilarious, rambling singer/songwriter fare the likes of which Todd Snider and Will Kimbrough would be proud of. Fitting, since both of those guys are friends of Tommy's, and they've all played in each other band's on each other's records for some time. Check out Tommy's MySpace page (linked above) for some songs if you haven't heard his stuff, then read this cover story in the Nashville Scene to learn the story behind his latest release.

Tommy will be playing Eddie's Attic later in the evening with local faves of ours, Rising Appalachia. We'll be selling tickets for $8 (they're $15 at the door), so be sure to get one from us if you're planning on attending the show.
