Floating Coats Photos

If you weren't here on Saturday, you missed one heck of a performance from the one and only Floating Coats. The boys brought a torpedo keg of Sweet Water 420, which was promptly drained, and played for upwards of an hour and a half, selling a fat stack of their debut CD in the process. As always, it was a joy to have them on the DCD stage. Oh, and we took a few photos...

Floating Coats in-store and CD release this Saturday!

This Saturday, April 23, our pals in the Floating Coats will hold their CD-release party right here at Decatur CD. For the unfamiliar, the Coats have played in this store more times than we can remember at this point, certainly as much if not more than any other act in the entire universe, stretching as far back as That Foul Year Of Our Lord Twenty Ought Six, according to our blog. Well, these old-school DCD gangstas are releasing their debut CD, Old Overcoat, and dang it if we're not gonna celebrate. They'll perform at 7 p.m. and have told us they'll be bringing "plenty of beverages" to boot. Sounds like fun to us. Sign up at their Facebook event page, come by and see us Saturday night, and be sure to request that one song about the Atlanta Hawks.

Swing Set and The Floating Coats photos

Just the other day (Saturday, December 22nd to be precise), we got a little crazy and opened our doors from 10am-12am. As is the appropriate measure to coincide with such a marathon of indie retail, we asked some folks to play music. Alex Brenner of Soda Jerk performed under his new solo moniker, Swing Set, to open the night. Following Mr. Brenner, The Floating Coats made their triumphant to Decatur CD. Let it be said that if you ever need a band to play for close to three hours, The Floating Coats are that band. Whoa ho ho. Quite a fun night. Thanks to all who were involved. We had a blast.

Art Walk photos

Last night, we had our Art Walk party in conjunction with the annual Decatur Arts Festival. For the third year in a row, that meant live music from the Floating Coats and free beer. This year in the brew category, we picked up a few Atlanta Brewing Company varieties. Tasty stuff. As usual, the Coats rocked it, sounding especially tight if we do say so ourselves (and we do, and just did, actually). In fact, we had at least a couple requests for recorded material from the band. Get on it, Coats! For now, though, enjoy these photos...

Art Walk party tomorrow night

Looks like we've taken care of your Friday (May 25) night plans for you. You can thank us later for taking your crazy, unorganized life, running it through a blender and creating a nice, tall, refreshing smoothie of clarity. Um, wHaT?!? Better get to the details before this post gets too carried away. Tomorrow night is the annual Decatur Art Walk, and we're one of the many businesses showing love for local creativity. Here's how it goes:

Where: Decatur CD
When: All night, really, but starting at around 7:30pm, The Floating Coats will perform live music.
What: The Floating Coats! Sheesh, you should really read more carefully. Also, a selection of Atlanta Brewing Company's fine adult beverages. Free, of course. Take a look at ABC's beer and tour pages. Good stuff.
Who: You and all your friends.

That's the haps. If you're not going out of town for the holiday weekend, we strongly suggest you join us for a relaxing evening of local business, music and art. Get out there and support the greatness happening in your community before it gets taken away from you. Hope to see you all tomorrow night...

Jim Threlkeld & Co. photos

Last night was fun. A solo Floating Coat and some of his friends performed here, and we must say, it was by far the most instrumentally diverse in-store performance in Decatur CD's storied three-year history. Not only did a piccolo (or something close to it), a ukulele (during a Talking Heads cover, no less) and another nifty little thing with a name that is completely eluding our minds right now (someone help) all make appearances, but they implemented a THEREMIN! See below for a photo of that beast in action. Folks, it was just awesome. Beer was drank, tunes were played and all went home happy.

Jim Threlkeld in-store performance TONIGHT

Above: He's the one on the far left.

Not much to do on a Tuesday night, you say? Well, we beg to differ. Tonight, our good friend and member of The Floating Coats, Jim Threlkeld, will be entertaining us with a free, live, acoustic, insert your own adjective here, in-store performance. When he was here with his band last time, in addition to playing several original compositions, they covered the Velvet Underground, Talking Heads and The Kinks, amongst others. It was a great time, and we expect nothing less tonight. He'll start playing right around 7pm. Oh, and did we mention there will be free beer for those 21 and over? Because there certainly will be. Mmm hmm.

While you're here, sign up for the two pairs of tickets we have to folk legend Tom Rush's show at Eddie Attic on Thursday. This guy is a pretty big deal, and we expect these will go fast, so do not delay.

More in-stores, news and, as usual, great new music, on the way soon!
