Terrific Thursday Sale

Around DCD HQ, we subscribe to the Nordstrom line of thinking this time of year: We just like celebrating one holiday at a time. That being said, now that the gobbling (of both sleep-inducing food and exclusive vinyl varieties) has come to an end, it's time to break out the jolly music. They say it's the most wonderful time of the year, and we're inclined to agree. As such, our holiday tunes are out in full force. You can find them in the usual bin, right across from the cash register, where the new-arrival used stuff resides the rest of the year.

Meanwhile, tomorrow is not only the first day of December, it's also Terrific Thursday! We'll be celebrating by marking everything in the store 10% off for one day only. Let's get this month off to a great start. There is one catch to the sale, though. In order to reap the benefits of sweet, sweet discounted music, you need to tell us, when you get up to the counter with your purchases, why Thursday is so terrific. Give us your opinion, we'll give you 10% off. And if you think Thursday is terrible, that's fine too. We're not here to boss you around. Not too much, anyway.

See you tomorrow, then! Let's make it terrific.

Show me the Scotsman who doesn't love the thistle...

We issued a challenge in our last e-mail. Anyone who came in and said they got the e-mail got 20% off their purchases tonight. But anyone who came in and sang the Utah State fight song got 21% off. One man did that, and we salute him with his picture on the blog. Good work!

Roman Candle in-store performance on Saturday!

Chapel Hill pop rockers Roman Candle will play an in-store performance at Decatur CD this very Saturday at 1 p.m. We're having a special one-day 10% off everything sale in honor of this event because we think you should come check the band out. But hey, don't take our word for it!

"Whiskeytown is the North Carolina band Roman Candle most resembles... In some circles, Roman Candle have been one of the great unsubstantiated rumors of modern pop-rock." -Pitchfork

"...a sometimes exhilarating, often winning slice-of-life affair in the best tradition of catchy alt-country." -All Music Guide

"part the kind of ragged, sprawling travelogue you'd imagine Paul Westerberg would pen if he was a roadie for Oasis at the height of Britpop, and part barrage of hallucinatory Dylanesque visions vomited up after a boozy, blurry night spent careening down dark, moonlit North Carolina backroads." -Paste

"..plan your lunch around it because you don’t want to miss it." -Atlanta's A-List, who also posted video here.

So, see you Saturday?

Happy birthday to us!

[Above: Warren Hudson, age three]

Whoa ho ho! We've been having such a great time celebrating our 5th birthday over the last 24 hours that we plum forgot to blog about it. Consider this a quick catch-up, then, for those of y'all not yet in the know. Starting yesterday (Friday), we began our weekend-long 20% off sale on everything in the store, including CDs, DVDs, LPs, books, box sets and, well, you know, everything. Stop by and get a piece of the cheapness!

Additionally, we've got a bunch of delicious, ice-cold, high-gravity beer. If you're reading this post, that stuff is in the cooler and ready to drink. There's a lot too, and as a customer of the store it's pretty much your born duty to consume it (21+ only, of course).

Finally, at 3pm today, The Bonaventure Quartet will play live in the store. Check out the group's MySpace page to get a six-song sample of what Creative Loafing calls Atlanta's Best Jazz Group of 2008. We're honored to have them.

That's pretty much sums it up. Stop by and celebrate with us! It's as much your party as it is ours. Thanks, as always, for your business. The last five years have been a blast. Here's to five more...

Deke Dickerson in-store performance on Friday!

What you need to know: Friday. 8pm. Deke Dickerson. Live. Free. Refreshments. Sale. Decatur CD. But hey, don't take our word for it. Take our newsletter's:

Deke Dickerson - Friday, September 12th - 8pm
This Midwestern native's history is rather immense. A country/rockabilly/surf icon, Dickerson's played in such bands as the Untamed Youth, Dave and Deke, and more. He's released a handful of albums, the most recent of which, King of the Whole Wide World, dropped just this past May. His music has been featured in myriad films, including Sideways, but this will be the first time his tunes have been featured live at DCD. He's calling it a party on his MySpace page, and we're planning to bring the noise with free, delicious beer for any 21+ patron that shows up to enjoy Deke's musical company. See you then!
Visit Deke Dickerson's MySpace page.

Oh yeah, and that sale? Glad you asked...

We've teamed up with our friends from WEA (who were kind enough to provide Friday's refreshments!) to offer a rather extensive Warner/Rhino catalog sale. What this means is that on Friday you'll be able to purchase select titles from Talking Heads, Otis Redding, Bjork, ZZ Top, Lucinda Williams, B-52's, Devo, Jackson Browne, Los Lobos, Ride, Deep Purple, Little Feat, 10,000 Maniacs, Tracy Chapman, The Cars, Warren Zevon, Dwight Yoakam, Violent Femmes and many more, all for $9 each! To make it easy for you, we'll have all the sale titles on display in the new releases bin, marked for your convenience. Pretty sweet, right?

To put it in perspective, you can't buy an album on iTunes for $9 (plus, you get a copy for your shelf our way). You can't buy three gallons of gas for $9. You can only get a decent meal for $9 if you're lucky. You can barely get a regular used CD for $9. And you certainly can't see a Falcons game for $9. But you can get tons of brand-new discs from some of our favorite artists on Friday for $9! Don't miss out on this opportunity.

We accept cash, check, credit or CAKE.

Happy birthday to us. Today kicks off Decatur CD's 4th Birthday Extravaganza. To celebrate our first four years as your independent music retailer, we're hosting four days of live musical entertainment, refreshments and big savings.

Tonight, Richard Parsons plays at 7pm. Tomorrow, the Georgia Fireflies play at 7:30pm. Saturday, Romantica plays at 2pm. Sunday, Silver Lakes play at 4pm. These are all fantastic acts with differing sounds, so if you're unfamiliar, click on their links (which head straight to each of their respective MySpace pages, each with song samples) and have a listen. We're psyched to have so much talent in the store this weekend.

Additionally, we'll have our usual free refreshments, which will be varied and delicious. Oh, and we're having this thing where we mark down all the CDs and vinyl and DVDs in the store to ridiculous levels. A sale, they apparently call it? Yeah, that's it. EVERYTHING in the store is 20% off as of 6pm today. You can also get any of the first five Led Zeppelin albums for $10/piece, thanks to our pals at the Warner Music Group. AND, if you choose extra wisely, you may just end up with a free CD. But you'll have to ask us about that at the counter if you don't already know the details.

That's pretty much it. There is still a lot to do, so we're going to get to it, but we trust we'll see you soon. Until then...

Meanwhile, the sale continues...

Even though the Summer of Love party finally drew to a close at around 10:30pm last night, the psychedelic sale continues through the weekend. As you can see, there's a rather colorful selection of releases that are 10% off through the end of business hours (6pm) on Sunday. That means that at the time of this posting, you've still got 24 hours and 45 minutes to get your cheap psych on. Hurry in to save on our liberal selection with includes 13th Floor Elevators, Sly Stone, Country Joe and the Fish, The Zombies, Cream, Pink Floyd, The Remains, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Vanilla Fudge, The Grateful Dead, The Kinks, Donovan and The Yardbirds, to name but a few.

Summer of Love photos

Last night was a little bit hectic and a lotta bit awesome. For one thing, The Back Yardbirds TOTALLY rocked it. After treating us to a full hour of Yardbirds tunes (touching on all the big ones, from "Train Kept A-Rollin'" to "For Your Love" to "Heart Full of Soul"), the guys returned and gave the still-eager crowd a few songs by the Rolling Stones, The Who and The Animals.

Let us just say that Warren's praise-laden description of the band was actually right on, as we had countless customers come up and tell us how much they loved the performance. The response was honestly pretty astounding, rivaling that of the Wilco listening party madness from a couple month's back, with tons of crowd-sung, call-and-response action. If The Back Yardbirds had a CD, we would've sold out of it. Thanks to the band and thanks to the many fine folks who showed up and spent their Friday evening with us. Oh, and don't forget that The Back Yardbirds open for Ian McLagan at the Five Spot on July 12th.

Additionally, the beer was delicious, plentiful and quickly gone. Thanks again to our friends at Rhino for sponsoring this event. The psych-specific 10% sale went quite well, and anyone who showed up clad in tie-dye or other Summer of Love regalia received 10% off everything in the store. We love it when people have fun and get involved, and in those instances, we're more than happy to hand out a little reward.

For now though, we have some more cleaning to do (buncha savages!), so enjoy the photos below and be ready for another special event coming on Tuesday...

REMINDER: Summer of Love party

Without going into too much detail (especially since you can read what we said just a few days ago by clicking right here), suffice it to say we're quite excited about the Summer of Love party on Friday (July 6th). We'll have beer (Victory, Terrapin, Lagunitas and Dogfish Head), a sale and a performance. Check the post linked above (or scroll down, bloggity style), and we'll see you Friday night!

Summer of Love party - this Friday!

Above: Bublé is psyched.

This Friday, folks. July 6th. That's when you had better get yourselves here, as we have quite an event. Starting around 7pm on Friday night, in honor of the 40th anniversary of the Summer of Love, we'll have free beer (for those of age, natch), a sale on select Rhino (the evening's sponsor...thanks, Rhino!) and psych-esque titles and a special in-store performance from a local Yardbirds tribute band. These guys call themselves The Back Yardbirds, and let us tell you, they're fantastic. Here's what Warren had to say about the group after seeing them at a recent gig:

"They're all excellent musicians. Just excellent. People were dancing their asses off. The guitar player is unreal. Everything about them is just straight on. If you didn't know the Yardbirds and this was your first exposure to their music, you'd think the Back Yardbirds wrote these songs. They're that good."

Phew. Sounds fun, right? We can't wait. So that's the scoop, then. This Friday, July 6th, free beer, a special sale and a fantastic in-store performance. We'll even offer extra savings to folks who decide to dress as if we were currently living during the original Summer of Love. Do your best, and we'll happily reward your efforts. See you then!

Modern Skirts photos

The Modern Skirts played in the store today, and they were fantastic. They stripped back and played an acoustic set, and the songs translated really well. Those boys have a gift for vocal melodies, and we love it. If you haven't listened to this excellent Athens pop band, check out the MySpace page (linked above, natch), or stop by the store and spend a few moments on our local band listening station, which has the sole album by the group.

Also, just in case you're not on our hallowed email list, we're having a 20% off EVERYTHING sale in honor of the in-store performance. That's right, you have two and a half hours to get in here and claim your cheap music. This is our first-ever one day sale, and it's been going quite well so far, but it will end soon. Make with the quickness!

For now, though, enjoy these photos...
