We're big, longtime fans of Kathleen Edwards. Her new album Voyageur—which features Justin Vernon (he of Bon Iver and Kathleen Edwards' Boyfriend fame), Norah Jones and John Roderick—is great, and she's playing Variety Playhouse tomorrow night. You should go. As a live performer, she's excellent, and this is show is going to be a real treat. Do not miss it.

Happy new year, everybody; happy birthday, Country Joe. How's 2012 treating you so far? Hopefully swell. We're still kinda catching up in the wake of the holiday madness, but you won't catch us complaining about business. After all, have you heard the news? Album sales are up 4% across the board, the first annual increase since 2004! Now, granted, that figure includes digital sales, but hey, we're still here, so that's cool. And we had our best December ever to boot. Thank you all so much for your support. What do you say we make 2012 even better, eh?

Of course, one thing we might could complain about this week is the complete and utter lack of new releases. But instead, we're going to focus on next week, dropping in this week's best (read: only) release, Elvis Presley's Elvis Country 40th anniversary reissue, into the mix for kicks and giggles. We like to think we're a lot kinder than the High Fidelity crew, but one thing we do share in common with Rob, Dick and Barry—aside from the obvious—is that we love making lists of the music we love. Maybe it's just comes with the territory, but there is something so satisfying about recommending music to folks, especially when they come back later, tell you they dig it and that they want more.

It's fun to discover, and we love facilitating that discovery. In our latest DCD Newsletter, we provided the Slacker's Guide to Holiday Shopping, and at the tail end of that, we threw in a few personal recommendations. Sarah Lee Guthrie/Johnny Irion Ticket Giveaway

Our friends at Ticket Alternative have provided us with some giveaway goodness for Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion's show at The EARL next Thursday, December 8th. Stop by the store to enter, and here's the Guthrie/Irion bio via the venue:

A lot can happen in five years, and for the husband-and-wife duo Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion, the time between Exploration, their first album together in 2005, and soon-to-be-released Bright Examples (Ninth Street Opus Records, Feb. 22, 2011), their new, full-length collaborative project, has been one nonstop whirlwind of activity. Not only has the couple toured extensively both as a duo and as part of the “Guthrie Family Rides Again” tour (with Sarah Lee’s dad, Arlo Guthrie), they’ve also released the children’s album Go Waggaloo (Smithsonian Folkways), a live DVD entitled Folk Song, a solo album by Johnny (Ex Tempore), parented their two young daughters and moved from South Carolina to the Berkshires in western Massachusetts.

“Never Far From My Heart,” is a shining example of the close harmony and emerging pop sensibilities Guthrie and Irion embrace. A sunny, mutual love letter, it was written when they were saying goodbye to South Carolina and preparing for their move north.

“Speed of Light” turns up the beat considerably. A stomping, steady 4/4 rhythm frames an addictively melodic pop tune and chiming guitars meet up with soul touches. In an earlier era, back when AM radio was all about the perfect three-minute record, “Speed of Light” would have gone straight to the top.

The inspiration behind the finger-pointing “Target On Your Heart” may be known to author Irion but neither he nor Guthrie are letting on. Says Sarah Lee, “There’s some good drama going on up here in Massachusetts to write about. That one took a while to grow on me. I didn’t like that song at first but Johnny kept wanting to play it. Finally we ended up doing it, and it ended up my favorite song on the record.”

Around DCD HQ, we subscribe to the Nordstrom line of thinking this time of year: We just like celebrating one holiday at a time. That being said, now that the gobbling (of both sleep-inducing food and exclusive vinyl varieties) has come to an end, it's time to break out the jolly music. They say it's the most wonderful time of the year, and we're inclined to agree. As such, our holiday tunes are out in full force. You can find them in the usual bin, right across from the cash register, where the new-arrival used stuff resides the rest of the year.

Meanwhile, tomorrow is not only the first day of December, it's also Terrific Thursday! We'll be celebrating by marking everything in the store 10% off for one day only. Save the Date: Numero Group Meet 'n' Greet, DJ Night, Record Sale

No doubt you've heard us go on about the Numero Group. The Chicago-based imprint is by far one of our favorite labels going, releasing all kinds of awesome, obscure archival stuff, everything from funk to power pop, gospel to folk. Well, the folks behind Numero are coming to town next week, and we're happy to say they're going to stop by good old Decatur CD to hang around on the afternoon of Wednesday, Nov. 16. Later on that evening, they'll be DJ'ing at 529 in East Atlanta and selling records. Needless to say, we highly recommend you attend this show.

Glenn Jones has a new album out on Thrill Jockey and helped the D-t-D folks by editing the book on their new and gorgeous John Fahey box. As you may have read on the blog a couple weeks back or in our last couple email newsletters, we've joined forces with the finest businesses in Decatur to benefit 50 Cents Period, an organization based out of Avondale Estates that's striving to create healthy futures for girls in developing countries in need of support for sanitary supplies, facilities and reproductive health education. In doing our part, we'll have a ton of ridiculously marked-down CDs (think: 50 cents-$7/piece), 50% off all used CDs and vinyl $8 or higher, a donation bucket up front for those who'd like to give directly, and finally, we'll be donating 50 cents of every new CD sold that day directly to the organization. The store will be decorated appropriately with red balloons and the like. This is a great, locally based organization, and we're proud to help out any way we can. We hope you'll do the same. In fact, here's a word from Warren about the charity...

"As the parent of a teenage girl, one sees firsthand the physical and mental changes that occur with your young loved one. This can be a difficult process for middle-class girls with all the support systems in place. Parental involvement, no lack of financial consideration when it comes to needed products. These episodes are so traumatic for young girls in third-world countries that, for a cost of only 50 cents/month per girl will keep these young ladies from missing school. School, of course, being the best deterrent to breaking the cycle of poverty. We're gonna raise some money for this very worthwhile endeavor. Come see us on the 22nd, and you can help us roll the trees of Decatur as well. Help us turn Decatur red and green on this day."

Here's a challenge, if you have a special lady in your life, whether she's a sister, mother, friend's daughter, aunt, etc.: Throw $5 in the jar, which will furnish a month's worth of supplies for 10 girls. We've fed the jar, and now it's your turn.

Exclusive Colin Meloy Photos!

Last night, Decemberists frontman Colin Meloy and his wife, Carson Ellis, delivered the Decatur Book Festival keynote address to a packed Presser Hall at Agnes Scott. We couldn't make it (we have a store to run, people, give us a break), but we're told it was most excellent. And anyway, we weren't worried about missing Mr. Meloy, as he had promised us an EXCLUSIVE photo shoot early this morning. An EXCLUSIVE photo shoot that has now been shot, resulting in the EXCLUSIVE photos below.

Meloy is a good sport, so when we told him it was Dragon*Con weekend, he agreed that it only made sense to dress the part. All of these EXCLUSIVE photos were taken in the middle of Ponce de Leon Ave. right in front of the store earlier this morning, just moments before Meloy and Ellis hopped on a plane and headed west for Bumbershoot. We blocked off the street from Taqueria del Sol (sorry, guys!) to Jimmy John's (ditto, guys!), and a small crowd of several thousand people gathered around to watch. Please enjoy...

TV on the Radio/Broken Social Scene Ticket Sale

As you may know, the Tabernacle is hosting one heck of a show on Thursday, Sept. 13. TV on the Radio and Broken Social Scene share the bill that night, and if you've tried to get tickets for the show online through a certain behemoth which shall not be named, you know they're kind of pricey. For example, if you were to purchase a pair of tickets through the usual channels online, channels which shall not be named, it would set you back $99. Phew! But, thanks to our pals at OK Productions, we've got a limited number of tickets at a discounted rate: $37/pop, plus a $2 service charge. Not bad, right? That means if you come to the store and buy a pair of tickets, it'll only cost you $78. See what happens when you shop local?

Not that that needed to be said, exactly, but it bears repeating. Yesterday, Warren sent Austin an email with the subject line, "Another brilliant Tom Waits episode. Can we put that on the blog and twitter?" The body of the email was blank. (And for the record, this'll be posted to our Facebook page as well.)

Thing is, we're big fans of Waits around these parts, so the news that he's got a new album coming in late October is good news indeed. Below, check out said "brilliant Tom Waits episode." Hopefully you found a way to hear the new song, "Bad as Me," as well. Hint: It's really great. Of course, we'll have the album—his first studio project in seven years, which is also called Bad as Me—on Oct. 25.

Billy Joe Shaver In-Store: Weds. Aug. 17 @ 6pm

At 71-years-young, Billy Joe Shaver is one of country music's living greats. He's written songs for Waylon Jennings, Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson. He's collaborated with the likes of Johnny Cash, Nanci Griffith and Charlie Daniels. It's pretty much impossible to talk about the man without dropping a ton of very important musical names, but that's only because he's been around so long and is respected by so many. It's with no small excitement then, that we are happy to announce that Shaver will be performing at Decatur CD on Wednesday, August 17th at 6 p.m. He'll play Smith's Olde Bar later in the evening.

(It's an anti-scalper trick the likes of which Tom Waits used during his last ATL gig.) As you probably know, Wilco drops its new album, Whole Love, the day before, so we figured, what better time than to connect these two events? On September 8th, Return to Forever (Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Lenny White, Frank Gambale, Jean-Luc Ponty) will play the Fox Theatre with support from Zappa Plays Zappa (Dweezil doing his dad Frank's material). It's a pretty awesome pairing, if we do say so ourselves, a pairing that's carries with it some pretty steep ticket prices ($35-$100). Luckily, we've got a few pairs of tickets to give away. The Civil Wars are coming to Agnes Scott!

Pretty exciting, right? If you're into the Americana/folk world, you've no doubt already heard of (and purchased music from) this pair. We've been selling The Civil Wars' debut album, Barton Hollow (not to mention their Record Store Day 7") like gangbusters since it came out in March. They've gotten bigtime celebrity co-signs from the likes of Taylor Swift and Grey's Anatomy, and are getting written up by all sorts of folks. There's a good reason for this, too. They make awesome, heartfelt, finely-crafted tunes the likes of which don't come along every day.

The point? Oh, there is a point.

The Civil Wars are coming to Agnes Scott's Presser Hall as a part of the Eddie & Agnes concert series that the school and Eddie Owen of Eddie's Attic have been doing of late. Pretty exciting stuff, if you ask us. The show is on Sunday, Oct. 9, tickets are $25 and you can get them through Ticket Alternative, which means you can pick them up right here at Decatur CD if you bring cash. Not a bad deal, right? Save the date!

Blame Sally, Beer and a Deal From Eddie's Attic

We've got a fun one coming Tuesday! From the newsletter...

As you may recall from last week, we've got an awesome in-store coming up Tuesday night that you should check out. We'll have some tasty beer in the cooler (summertime brews like Bell's Oberon, Victory Prima Pils and Magic Hat Vinyl, courtesy of the excellent folks of Ale Yeah!) as we are wont to do, and to sweeten the pot, our good friend Eddie (of Eddie's Attic) has made this generous offer: Anyone who comes to the in-store, likes what they see and wants to watch it with a full band at Eddie's later in the evening can get into the show for half price. The tickets for the show are $15, so you can pay $7.50 just by stopping by Decatur CD! Not bad, right? If you want the half-price ticket, be sure to tell us after the performance here at the store so we can put your name on the list.

Blame Sally In-Store
Comprising four Bay Area women in the their forties and fifties, Blame Sally is an excellent, rootsy outfit, and we're quite taken with their new album, Speeding Ticket and a Valentine. So taken, in fact, that we put it on a listening station. What's more, when the band comes to town on Tuesday to play Eddie's Attic up the street, they'll stop by here and treat us to an in-store at 6:30 p.m. They're just lovely, and we're not the only ones who dig it; the All Music Guide heaps heavy praise upon the band's "acoustic guitars, piano, and creamy close harmonies predominate, with occasional hints of banjo and lap steel fleshing out the politely folk-rock arrangements." Plus, they're extremely accessible. As multi-instrumentalist Renee Harcourt says on the band's website: "There are a lot of people who become really connected to us, and fascinated by, 'Ooh, what's their story?' We've had fanatical fans in their 40s and older, and also plenty of young girls who've been super into it. Just thinking that's cool: 'Wow, that could be my mom!'" Here's a quick story about why our customers are so great...

As you probably know if you frequent this blog, we send out occasional newsletters to keep our best customers informed for what's going on at good old DCD. Those newsletters, which never come out more than once a week, and usually not even that often, are the best place to find out about sales, in-store performances, free beer and all the other general nonsense we like to traffic in. Oftentimes, these newsletters are whipped up at the very last moment, when Warren and Austin are half-delirious, so the introductory paragraphs can sometimes get a little silly. Like this one, from our Friday email:

What a busy, busy week we've got ahead of us. Let's get right into it, shall we? Oh, but before we get right into it, Monsieur Warren D. Hudson, His Holiness of DCD Chapel and Wedding Emporium would like to make this offer to each and every one of you. Neil Young's new/old album, which was recorded in the middle '80s and only just released this week as a part of his archives series, is called A Treasure. His band on this countrified gem is called International Harvesters. Keeping these two facts in mind, here's the deal: If you bring us a) an international harvester tractor, which you'll then park in our lot so we can take pictures to put on the blog, or b) a Lionel train set that we can set up to circle the interior of the store, after which we'll take pictures to put on the blog, or c) a piece of sunken treasure found deep under the sea, which we'll take pictures of to put on the blog, we'll give you a free copy of the album. Not bad, huh? Not bad at all. We're tough, but fair.

Now, we certainly didn't expect anyone to take us up on such a preposterous offer; those sentences were selfishly written in an attempt to entertain ourselves and hopefully a few readers who have yet to tire of our antics. But! Lo and behold, a gentleman walked into the store just moments ago and gifted us the lovely International tractor above. For his troubles, he received a free copy of the aforementioned Neil Young disc, because, after all, we're nothing if not true to our word.

And the tractor? Well, it's proudly displayed out in front of the cash register, cuddling with a copy of the CD. Stop by and have a look. Thanks, as always, for reading—and playing along with our goofiness. You guys are the best.

This Saturday, June 18, we'll be partying Bon Iver style. No, that doesn't mean we'll be exiling ourselves in a Wisconsin cabin (Plane tickets are expensive!), nor will Kanye West be hanging out at the store (He canceled at the last minute). Rather, in honor of the new Bon Iver album coming Tuesday, the rather aptly-titled Bon Iver, we'll be playing the record all day, selling a special 12" vinyl bonus release, handing out posters and more. It's gonna be fun. If you haven't read it yet, you should check out the Bon Iver feature in the new Rolling Stone (Zach Galifianakis cover); it's pretty darn great.

Bruce's Fishy Threepeat

For the last three years, one of our best customers, a cornhusker-loving dude named Bruce, has been sending us epic fish pictures from his annual trip with his dad. We gladly post them again and again, because, well, there simply aren't enough people sending us awesome photos of giant fish. This year's creature is the giantest yet, but for some reason, Bruce's smile has faded and turned into a hardened expression of stone-cold intimidation. Bloodlust, perhaps? Hard to say. At any rate, another great photo!

If you're looking for a fun musical event benefiting a good cause this weekend, we'd like to suggest Tunes From the Tombs. It runs Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. to dusk, and features countless musical acts from all over the country, including some of our Atlanta favorites such as Oryx + Crake, Predator, Slim Chance and the Convicts, Howlies, The Coathangers and many more. Moreover, it's ridiculously cheap—$10 for one day, $15 for two, cheaper options for young ones—and the proceeds benefit the historic Oakland Cemetery and its vast grounds. Twain's Springfest 2011 is today!

Starting at 1 p.m. today, in cooperation with our newly-revised and most beautiful weather forecast, Twain's is hosting its third annual Springfest, a multi-faceted event consisting of family-friendly fun, tons of music and more, all to benefit the Atlanta Food Bank. Twain’s proudly presents the 3rd annual SpringFest benefiting The Atlanta Community Food Bank. Family fun with kids’ DJ Amy Handler of The Kids Are Alright fame will be spinning tunes to get little feet tapping, and the Imperial Opa will dazzle with their circus antics until 2:30. Thereafter, bands will alternate between outside and inside stages late into the night. Great local talent on hand include The Shathouse Rats, The Mermaids, Abby Wren and What It Is, Blair Crimmins and the Hookers, and Gentleman Jesse and His Men. Enjoy smoked pork sandwiches and Twain’s brews out on the patio, get some great deals at the silent auction, and take in some of the best bands in town, all for a great cause. $10 admission/person goes entirely to ACFB, kids 10 and under are free.

In case you missed it in Ye Olde Decatur CD Newsletter, here's what's going down today...

Today marks the release of the new Fleet Foxes album, Helplessness Blues, which we've been playing in the store all weekend and currently have on a listening station, and we're going to have what amounts to an all-day listening party. The good folks at Sub Pop have sent us some goodies that we're passing along to you. We'll be playing the record near constantly for most of the day, giving away gorgeous, limited-edition silkscreened posters while they last, and we'll even have a giveaway box set up for a pair of tickets to the band's upcoming, sold-out show at the Tabernacle along with a limited-edition white vinyl copy of the record. Phew! Prizes galore, people. Because it wouldn't be a DCD party without some beverages, we'll have some beer and even some wine onhand for the 21+ set. It's gonna be a good time, hanging out and listening to music, which are two of our favorite things!

As you no doubt know by now, we are a proud Ticket Alternative vendor, selling tickets to many of Atlanta's finest music venues with far less surcharges than that other, giant service that rhymes with Clicketsasster. Floating Coats in-store and CD release this Saturday!

This Saturday, April 23, our pals in the Floating Coats will hold their CD-release party right here at Decatur CD. For the unfamiliar, the Coats have played in this store more times than we can remember at this point, certainly as much if not more than any other act in the entire universe, stretching as far back as That Foul Year Of Our Lord Twenty Ought Six, according to our blog. Well, these old-school DCD gangstas are releasing their debut CD, Old Overcoat, and dang it if we're not gonna celebrate. They'll perform at 7 p.m. and have told us they'll be bringing "plenty of beverages" to boot. Sounds like fun to us. Sign up at their Facebook event page, come by and see us Saturday night, and be sure to request that one song about the Atlanta Hawks.

So, here's a cursory glance at some of the highlights. Please know there will be much more... * A special one-day-only 40% off sale on select non-RSD vinyl. Now, this is hand-selected stuff, which we will mark with stickers, and NOT all the other non-RSD vinyl. That's an important distinction to make, but we'll make it very clear and keep this stuff all together in the same spot. This special sale section will include titles from the likes of The Hold Steady, Cocorosie, Jonathan Richman, The Gossip, Metallica, Butch Walker, The Sadies, Josh Ritter, Tom Petty, Cold War Kids, Midlake, Ted Leo, Devo, Eric Clapton, Band of Horses and much more. We figure people are going to have vinyl fever on Saturday and the only prescription is a more vinyl!
* Starting at noon, we'll have Community BBQ sliders. What kind of sliders? Our man Stuart elaborates: "smoked brisket braised slowly with onions, garlic and Kansas City-style bbq sauce." Sounds good to us. Stuart will also be bringing a side to go with the sliders. We're getting hungry just thinking about it. Speaking of Community, were you aware they did catering? It's true! Check our their website for more details.
* Free beer all day (21+ only, of course), from our friends at Magic Hat Brewing. They've dropped off a veritable buttload of their spring seasonal, Vinyl lager, a drink we've featured here in the store at events past, and which the brewery describes thusly: "a beer with a deep amber hue, sweet malt taste and a slight balancing hop touch." Yum! Frankly, we couldn't think of a more aptly-named brew to drink while celebrating Record Store Day.
* The one and only King of Pops will be brandishing his chilled-out treats in front of the store starting around 2 p.m. This will be weather permitting, of course, so put in a good word with Mother Nature for us! If you've had a pop or two in the past, either the last time the King stopped by DCD or at any of his myriad other spots around the city, you know these things are the real deal and sooo tasty.
* Tickets giveaways from our friends at Ticket Alternative! We'll have a box for first names and phone numbers on this one, and while we're still confirming the full show list, it will include the likes of Phosphorescent, Wintersleep, Sleigh Bells, Mogwai, The Daylights and Sleigh Bells. Two Caroline Herring Release Shows at Eddie's Attic

Perhaps you've heard of Kickstarter, the self-proclaimed "largest funding platform in the world." It's a website that's helped myriad artistic projects around Georgia, from Chunklet's Indie Cred Test book to Kevn Kinney's upcoming album. It's a great site, where worthy artists can raise money for myriad endeavors, and those that contribute are treated to excellent rewards.

One of the latest Kickstarter success stories is Decatur's own Caroline Herring. We've been big supporters of her for a while, so seeing that her forthcoming album was more than doubly funded by friends and fans was an excellent thing indeed. It's a children's album called The Little House Songs, and we'll let Caroline's blurb from her Kickstarter page describe it:

"Last fall I decided to write an album of songs based on my children's favorite books. After sitting down with a big stack of them, I realized I simply couldn't get past the book on the top of the stack, The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton. “Once upon a time there was a little house, way out in the country…” The small and sturdy pink house wonders about those city lights far in the distance, and Burton describes and illustrates in great and wondrous detail how the city comes to surround her. Is there a way out for a dilapidated little house that longs to see the stars again? Described as one of the most beloved children’s books of the 20th century, The Little House inspired me as a child. Both of my children, Carrie and Sam, love the book as much as I did."

To celebrate, Caroline is playing two shows at Eddie's Attic next weekend. Here's the low down, via her website: "Come to Caroline's huge CD release party for her new children's album, The Little House Songs, based on the book The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton. There will be two shows on Saturday, April 16th at Eddie's Attic. Children of all ages are welcome! Caroline and her quartet will also have a show on Friday night, April 15th for those who like her music for adults..."
